BEAUMONT, Texas – The Montagne Center will be filled with happy faces Friday during Lamar University’s annual Cardinal Connection event.
More than 1,000 students from the Beaumont Independent School District will be on hand for the program that encourages children to read. The youngsters will have a chance to interact with Lamar student-athletes, many of whom had visited Beaumont schools throughout the month of April to read to the students.
Cardinal Connection is conducted through the Lamar athletics department because of the unique role-model opportunities that exist between student-athletes and young children. Involvement in the project allows the department to qualify for sponsorship funds provided by ExxonMobil.
Lamar President Dr. Kenneth Evans will be the featured speaker. In addition, Lamar student-athletes will perform skits that encourage reading. There will be appearances by Lamar’s mascots.
Also in attendance will be ISD Superintendent Dr. Timothy B. Chargois, Rebecca Knott from ExxonMobil, and Gwendolyn Lacy, the supervisor of early child/language arts for the BISD.
The event gets under way at noon.
