Nearly 100 Lamar University student-athletes posted grade-point averages of 3.0 or better for the recently completed Fall 2007 academic semester.

A total of 19 student-athletes received a 4.0 gpa, with 51 notching a 3.5 or better gpa and 98 securing at least a 3.0 gpa. All of those numbers are the most for a single semester since Fall 2001, when Helene Thill, Assistant Athletic Director for Academics, arrived at Lamar.

The men's tennis team posted the highest overall team gpa with a 3.33 average, while the women's cross country squad ranked first among women's teams with a 3.31 gpa.

"These numbers just show how hard our student-athletes work in the classroom as well as with each of their particular sports," said Thill.

Additionally, eight Lamar athletes participated in commencement exercises last Saturday at the Montagne Center. Those earning their bachelor's degree included:
Amanda King, women's track & field
Ryan Kornmann, men's golf
Hamish Meacheam, men's cross country/track & field
John Mertz, men's basketball
Durand Murray, men's basketball
Dionne Pounds, women's basketball
Dusty Smith, men's golf
Dawie Van Der Walt, men's golf
