BEAUMONT – With two out in the bottom of the fourth inning, a big clap of thunder sounded and a bolt of lightning flashed behind Vincent-Beck Stadium and forced both the Lamar University and Sam Houston State baseball teams off the field. Soon after the rain started and postponed the game in until 11 a.m. Sunday morning. The series finale will be played soon after.
In between the resumed game and the finale, the Cardinals (32-15, 17-8 Southland Conference) will honor 11 seniors that are playing in their final game at The Beck. The resumed game will have
Jake Nash at the plate with a fresh count.
The Bearkats (31-18, 19-6) hold a 7-3 lead in the game after they trounced for a six-run third inning. Tied at 1-1, Bryce Johnson led off the inning with a single on a bang-bang call that against the Cardinals, and then a bunt single and sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third for Zach Smith's two-run single to right.
Four straight hits, two of them doubles, scored another four runs- largely on a two-run double to left from Jaxxon Grisham.
Lamar responded with two in the bottom of the inning when
Cutter McDowell led off with a triple to right field and
Reid Russell scored him on a single to right center. After a wild pitch moved Russell to second,
Trey Silvers was able to send him home on a two-out base knock- his fifth RBI of the series.
Cardinal starter
Billy Love is on the hook for the loss and was pulled after 2 2/3 innings of work. He gave up all seven runs on nine hits and no walks.
