Cardinals wrap up busy weekend at Texas State

BEAUMONT, Texas – Including late runs in California Friday night, the Lamar University track and field program wrapped up its hectic weekend with some top times of the season from several at the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State Saturday.

In the very late hours Friday night – 10 p.m. Pacific Time – both Jannika John and Evelyn Chavez put up big numbers in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational, and both finished with the third and fourth times all-time at Lamar, respectively. John was 23rd on a 34:59.54 mark and Chavez finished on a 35:11.85 time. For John it was her first time to race in the 10K at Lamar and Chavez shaved 40 seconds off of her personal best.

They fell just short of Midde Hamrin's blistering record of 33:10.11 in 1980 and Leigh Lattimore's 34:19.82 run in 2014.

Saturday at the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State, the men's and women's 4x1 teams put up their season best times, including their work Friday at the Texas Relays. The women's group, made of Chanissey Fowler, Deja Phillips, Janay Stanton and Erin Derrow marked in a 46.53. The same group ran a 46.81 time Friday and topped the best of 46.73 heading into the weekend.

The men's team featured Tylen Guidry, Thomas Lightfoot, Damerian Toliver and Brian O'Bonna. That group raced to a 41.79 finish, besting the 42.50 time it had Friday. Heading into the week, the men's top time was 41.18.

Phillips also put up her personal season best in the women's triple jump on an 11th place leap of 38 feet, 7 inches. She finished along with teammate Thai Williams, who was ninth on a 38, 9 ¾ jump. Williams' jump ranks seventh in the Southland Conference.

On the men's side of the triple jump, Guidry and O'Bonna finished fifth and sixth respectively. Guidry marked in at 48 feet, 11 ½ inches followed by O'Bonna's 48 feet, 10 inch leap. Javon McCray also competed in the event and put up a 44 feet, ¾ inch jump.

Stanton had a team season best in the women's 200 meters. She finished 22nd with a top time of 24.84, just short of her personal best time of 24.75 at the Youbaitis Invitational late last season. Derrow ran the race to a 24.94 time and Taeylor Roquemore set her young personal best at 25.77.

The Cardinals continue their outdoor season at Baylor Saturday with the Baylor Invitational, slated to begin at 10 a.m. in Waco.
