Fowler big for Cardinals at Baylor Invitational

WACO, Texas – Chanissey Fowler led a group that claimed 12 top 10 spots and a few personal bests Saturday when the Lamar University Track and Field Teams competed at the Baylor Invitational, hosted at Clyde Hart Track and Field Stadium.

Fowler recorded a new personal best in the women's 100 meters that put her to fourth all-time in Lamar history in the event, and then turned around and led the women's 4x100-meter relay team to the second best time a LU group has every put up.

She raced to a sixth-place finish in the women's 100 with an 11.64 mark that bested the 11.71 time she completed at the Southland Championships in 2015. Her time ranks fourth behind Alicia McIntosh (11.44), Ashley Idunoba (11.56) and Carol Aikels (11.63).

Fowler, along with Deja Phillips, Janay Stanton and Erin Derrow, raced to a 45.90 time in the women's 4x1, which is second all-time at Lamar behind last year's run of 45.66. The men's 4x1 team was 10th at the meet with a 42.18 mark.

Thai Williams wasn't far behind Fowler in the 100 with her 11.92 time that was good for 13th, which is her career best. Prior to that, she was eighth in the long jump at 19 feet, 3 ½ inches. Phillips was 12th in the long jump on an 18 feet, nine inches leap.

Brian O'Bonna was also eighth on the men's side of the long jump. He put a leap of 23 feet, ¾ inches before he took the track in the 100 meters and ran a personal best 10.62, 16th place run. Adam Richard competed with O'Bonna in the long jump and was 11th at 22 feet, 5 ¾ inches.

Alexandra Sokolova took fourth in the women's 800 meters when she crossed the finish line in 2:13.39. On the men's side, TaMar Hicks was ninth with a 1:55.57 race.

Meagan Menifee and Kyara Levi, who were 10th and 12th respectively in the 400-meter hurdles, led the women's 4x400-meter relay team to a sixth place time of 3:35.85. Menifee ran a 1:06.00 time in the hurdles and Levi followed at 1:07.12.

Damerian Toliver raced on the men's side of the 400 hurdles, and was eighth at 54.18.

Cormac Kelly had the highest place finish for the Cardinals on the day, a second-place finish in the men's 3,000 meters at 8:44.82. Kyle Garcia was in the top 10 of the event at 9:03.14. On the women's side, Reavis was 13th at 10:54.48 – a personal best for her – and Meghan DuPree was 15th at 10:59.82.

The Cardinals return to the track in a two-meet week starting Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays before Saturday's Bryan Clay Invitational.
