FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - In the end, another personal-best time at the NCAA West Preliminary was out of reach for Aaron Bennett as he came up just one round short of next month's NCAA Championships.
Bennett, a native of Southampton, England, ran in the fastest 800 meter heat of the day, but after a strong opening lap, he was unable to keep pace with the front of the pack, finishing in 1:55.51 and placing 24th. The race brought the graduate student's opening campaign in the Red and White to a close. He finishes ranked third on LU's all-time outdoor performance list in the 800, earning a pair of all-conference accolades and an individual league title as a member of the record-setting indoor distance medley relay team.
Another Southampton product, Louise Webb, ran in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, but she was unable to finish. The graduate student had been battling an injury since the Southland Championships earlier this month. A first-year Cardinal as well, Webb was both the indoor conference newcomer of the year and athlete of the year and a runner-up in the league's outdoor steeplechase.
The meet brought LU's track season to its end. In all, the Cards took home 11 conference event championships and earned seven league awards, which ranks as the most of any league school.
