HOUSTON, Texas - The Lamar University men's indoor track team placed third at the Leonard Hilton Memorial that wrapped up late Friday night at the University of Houston.
The Cardinals finished with 59 points, behind only Houston's 135 points and the 106.5 points garnered by UTSA.
Francis Kasagule had a strong showing for Lamar, winning the 1-mile run in 4 minutes, 15.17 seconds and placing second in the 800 meters with a time of 1:53.89.
Greg Williams of Lamar was second in the 400 meters with a time of 49.53 seconds. Cedric Coppens of Lamar was seventh in the 800 meters in 1:58.77.
Lamar's 4x400-meter relay team of Julius Kasule, Jerel Massenburge, Justin Krautz and Williams was second in 3:18.15. Lamar's distance medley unit of Aaron Malek, Josh Raglon, Austin Malek and Jared Rodriguez finished third with a time of 11:29.08.
The Lamar women placed 10th out of 16 teams, finishing with 15 points. Rice won the team title with 127 points.
Lamar had four runners in the top eight in the 5,000-meter run, led by Emily Carpenter's third-place finish with a time of 18:41.70. Taylor Cloy was fifth in 18:42.51, Nora-Beth Saunders was sixth in 19:52.32 and Daisy Cantu was eighth in 20:30.71.
The Lamar track teams return to action Sunday, Jan. 31 at the Houston Indoor Classic in Houston.
