FRISCO – Sam Stabler quickly established himself among the nation’s best last Friday, and on Wednesday, the Southland Conference took notice, naming him the conference’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Stabler, a junior out of Queniborough, England, completed the 3,000 meter run in 8 minutes, 1.29 seconds at the Texas A&M 12-Team Invitational. The time vaulted him to the top of the national leaderboard for the event, where he holds a 2.48 second advantage over second on the list. A vital member of Lamar’s cross country program, the Englishman earned All-Southland honors in the fall after helping the Cardinals to a seventh men’s title in eight years.
Stabler is the second LU harrier to earn weekly honors this season after Louise Webb took home the same award on the women’s side last week. The Cards will return to action next week at the University of Houston’s Howie Ryan Invitational.
