BEAUMONT – After a strong opening to outdoor season last week at Rice, the Lamar men’s and women’s track and field teams will look for an encore this weekend with a trip to Stephen F. Austin’s Carl Kight Invitational at Fletcher Garner Track at Homer Bryce Stadium in Nacogdoches.
Erin Brown, who set a school record in the triple jump to close out indoor season, will be looking to build on it this weekend as she competes for the first time this season outdoors. She’ll be joined in the event by Saschelle Slaughter. Usually a sprinter, Slaughter will be jumping in the event for just the third time in her career. Last season, she ascended to fifth on the school’s all-time performance list.
Robert Badillo will compete in the event for the men, and he’s also slated to be one of five LU men to participate in the long jump. The group will include Xavier Broussard, Michael Lester, Johnathon Reece and Jared Benford, who is set to jump for just the second time in his career.
Beatrice Douglas and Carissa Hill headline the long jumpers for the women, and they’ll compete alongside freshman Nicole Alozie, who took home an individual crown at the Howie Ryan meet during indoor season.
Reece, a fourth place finisher at the conference indoor meet, will also compete in the high jump. Douglas and Emma Lowry are slated for the women’s event.
Pole vaulters Leslie Beard, LU’s all-time record holder, and Hannah Callaway as well as thrower Denisha Nichols will round out the Cardinal field athletes.
On the track, the trio of Benford, Thomas Lightfoot and Sydney Wandix will participate in the 100 meter dash. Wandix will also be the lone Lady Card in the 200, and Le’Trey Burton will represent the men in the event.
Four Lady Cards will run in the 400, headlined by Slaughter, who became the second-best indoor athlete in the race in school history earlier this year. She’ll run alongside Sarah Shim, who posted a team-best time last week, as well as Elzbieta Gawron and Nia Davis
Trevon Davis, Brandon Franz, Kevyn Smith and Chance Williams will race for the men.
Rachael Davee and TaMar Hicks are scheduled for the 800, and seven Cards will run in the 1,500, headlined by Aaron Bennett, who won the 800 crown at last week’s Rice meet. He’ll run with Sean Chalmers, Sean Guiney and Mike Kershaw, and the trio of Belinda Aguilar, Megan Flanagan and Kaitlynn Warren will participate on the women’s side.
Hurdlers Burton, Brielle Johnson and Dominique Taylor complete the LU entries.
Aside from the Kight Invitational, three other Cardinals are also slated for action, flying out to Palo Alto, Calif., to race at the Stanford Invitational. Indoor Athlete of the Year Louise Webb will run in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and Indoor Freshman of the Year Kayla de Bondt is set for her outdoor debut with the 1,500. Leigh Lattimore, who earned a place on the medal stand during indoor season in both the 3,000 and 5,000, is scheduled for the 10,000.
