BEAUMONT – Three members of the Lamar track and field team will be looking to bolster their credentials for getting into the NCAA West Preliminary as they are set to compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend at George C. Griffin Track in Atlanta.
Aaron Bennett is the only track athlete slated to compete. The Southampton, England, native finished second at this past weekend’s Southland Outdoor Championships. His season-best time of 1:49.21 currently ranks 17th in the NCAA West and 48th in the nation. He also ranks third on LU’s all-time performance list.
Jumpers Beatrice Douglas and Erin Brown will round out the trio. Douglas, a senior out of Silsbee, is aiming for a second trip to the prelims. She enters the weekend with a season-best mark of 19 feet, six inches, and is coming off a second-place performance at the Southland Championships. Douglas is currently tied for 48th in the West, and only the top 48 are guaranteed a spot in the meet. She holds and all-time best mark of 19 feet, nine inches, which ranks second in the LU history books.
Brown will be aiming to grab a spot in the 48 for the first time in her career. The junior set the indoor school record this past February with a mark of 38 feet, 8.25 inches. This past weekend, Brown fouled on her only three attempts, one of which exceeded 40 feet, which would have been another school record. The 48th spot in the NCAA West is currently a distance of 40 feet, 3.5 inches.
The Georgia Tech Invitational will begin on Friday and wrap up on Saturday.
