FRISCO – Leigh Lattimore felt both joy and relief this past Sunday after taking home the 5,000 meter conference individual championship, and on Thursday she was honored for her achievement, becoming the first ever Lady Cardinal to earn Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year award for the outdoor track and field season.
“It really meant a lot to me to win the race this weekend,” Lattimore said. “It was a goal to finally win, and I’m very happy that I was able to do it. This is a massive confidence boost for me, and it’s great to end the conference meet on a good note. It’s nice to have these kinds of awards, but now I’m looking forward to the NCAA prelims.”
Previously, Lattimore, a graduate student out of Pinner, England, had finished second twice and third once in Southland events dating back to last fall’s cross country season. She also earned Newcomer of the Year for her performance during cross country season, and she’s currently ranked 26th in the 10,000 meter run for the NCAA West region.
The NCAA West Preliminary will begin on May 29 at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
