BEAUMONT - Five Lamar men's and women's track athletes will be aiming to impress next week as they were selected to compete at the NCAA West Preliminary, which will be held at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
Chief among the LU qualifiers is Sam Stabler, who just completed one of the more dominant indoor and outdoor seasons in recent history. The Queniborough, England, native earned four individual titles and a relay crown over the course of the two conference championship meets, and he'll be the 10th-seeded runner in the 1,500 meter field with a time of 3:42.18, which was set at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Meet at Rice. The junior currently ranks 20th in the nation in the event.
Two other Cardinals posted qualifying times at that same meet as Aaron Bennett clocked in at 1:49.21 in the 800, which ranks him 51st nationally. He'll be seeded 16th in the field next week. Saschelle Slaughter, a senior out of Missouri City, finished the 400 in 54.51 to grab the 48th and final slot race.
Leigh Lattimore and Louise Webb round out the quintet. Both graduate students out of England, each had to travel even further to record their qualifying times. Lattimore will be seeded 25th in the 10,000 after finishing in 32:20.83 at the Stanford Invitational, and Webb picked up the 24th slot with a time of 10:19.83 for the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the Mt. SAC Relays.
The NCAA West Preliminary will begin on Thursday, May 29, and continue through Saturday, May 31.
