EUGENE, Ore. -
Lamar University's Joonas Harjamaki advanced to the finals of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Wednesday.
Harjamaki turned in a time of 8 minutes, 45.17 seconds to advance to Friday's championship race. He was one of 14 athletes to qualify for the finals.
"This was a good opening race for us," Lamar track coach Trey Clark said. "Joonas did his job today by getting through to the finals. He'll be ready for the finals on Friday."
The steeplechase finals are scheduled for 8 p.m. (Central) Friday.
Harjamaki was the first of three Lamar athletes to compete at this year's NCAA meet. Francis Kasagule will compete in the semifinals of the men's 1,500 meters at 6:45 p.m. Thursday. Samuel Kosgei will compete in the men's 10,000-meter finals at 9:25 p.m. Thursday.
Should Kasagule advance, he would compete in the men's 1,500-meter finals at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
