BEAUMONT, Texas - For a little while on Thursday, running shoes rather than golf shoes will be the footwear of choice at the Bayou Din Golf Course in Beaumont.

That's because nine holes of the 27-hole facility will be used as a race course as Bayou Din serves as the venue for the Southland Conference Cross Country Championships. The 6-kilometer women's race will start at 9 a.m., with the 8-kilometer men's event set to get under way at 9:45 a.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 10:45 a.m.

This will be the first time since 2004 that Lamar University will serve as the host school for the championships, and the first time that a college cross country meet will be held at Bayou Din.

"We were looking for a course that would be spectator friendly, and Bayou Din certainly fits that bill," Lamar cross country and track coach Trey Clark said. "We wanted he spectator to be able to watch most of the race, and with the course we've laid out, spectators should be able to see 95 percent of the race."

Even better for fans is the fact that admission is free.

Clint Martin, the director of golf at Bayou Din and a 2002 graduate of Lamar, is happy to have the course serve as host for the championships.

"We like to support Lamar whenever we can," Martin said. "It's good to see the community get excited about the university."

The Lamar men will be gunning for their fifth consecutive championship, and 10th overall, while the women will be looking for their fourth overall title, and first since winning three consecutive championships from 2004-2006.

"They should be good races," Clark said. "We were able to design a great race course. It will be flat and fast."

Bayou Din Golf Course is located at 8537 Labelle Road in Beaumont.
