BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University cross country standout Samantha Walkow placed ninth at the Canadian Cross Country Championships Women's Junior Race in Guelph, Ontario, over the weekend.
Walkow covered the 5-kilometer course in a time of 18 minutes, 21 seconds. Her ninth-place finish qualified her to represent Canada in the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) Cross Country Championships.
"Samantha capped off a big freshman year for herself. The last three races of the year for Sam (the Southland Conference Championships, the NCAA Regionals and the Canadian Championships) were her best performances," Lamar cross country coach Jake Stewart said. "Going into the race, I felt as though she was capable of a top-20 performance, but at the same time, I wasn't surprised that she finished ninth."
Walkow will compete in indoor and outdoor track for Lamar this winter and spring.
"This is the type of performance that will propel Samantha through the rest of her freshman year and the rest of her time at Lamar," Stewart said.
Another Lamar freshman student-athlete, Nora Beth-Saunders, finished 106th in the same race.
