BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University men's cross country runner Joonas Harjamaki will represent his native Finland at the 2009 European Cross Country Championships in Dublin, Ireland, on Sunday.
Harjamaki, a junior, earned all-conference honors from the Southland Conference this fall as he helped Lamar win its fourth consecutive SLC championship and finish third in the NCAA South Central Regional Championships.
A maximum of six athletes per country are allowed for the championships.
"This is a wonderful honor for Joonas. He's a tireless worker, whose improvement over the fall in cross country warrants him representing Finland," Lamar cross country coach Jake Stewart said. "Any time an athlete can represent his or her country at an event like the European Championships it's quite an accomplishment. Joonas is excited for this opportunity to run against Europe's best, and he's excited to represent his country, which is an irreplaceable honor for any athlete."
Harjamaki had a stellar season for the Cardinals this fall, placing fifth in the Southland Conference Championships and 14th at the NCAA South Central Regionals as Lamar just missed out on earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
