Matt Gowan is in his third season on the Lamar baseball staff and first as the volunteer assistant.
Gowan serves as the program's strength and conditioning coach and also works with the pitchers and catchers. He is also an instructor at the Jim Gilligan Lamar Baseball Summer Camp.
A two-year letterwinner for the Cardinals from 2002-03, Gowan was an All-Southland Conference catcher for Lamar in 2003.
A native of Decatur, Ala., Gowan helped Lamar post a 36-24 record in 2002 and capture the SLC Tournament title and advance to the NCAA Regional at Austin. He was named to the 2002 SLC all-tournament team.
Gowan helped the 2003 team win its ninth SLC regular season title with a 40-18 record and advance to the NCAA Regional at Austin. The Cardinals posted a 3-2 record at the regional, pushing host Texas to a championship game. Gowan was named to the regional all-tournament team.
An excellent student, Gowan was named to the SLC all-academic team in 2003. Prior to Lamar, Gowan was an all-conference performer at Jefferson State CC.
Gowan received a bachelor degree in December of 2003 and is currently pursuing a masters degree in kinesiology.
