Josh Gray is the newest addition to the Lamar baseball coaching staff, entering his first season as the Cardinals' volunteer coach. Gray will work with the pitchers and serve as the bullpen coach during games, and also oversees the team's strength and conditioning program. Gray was a four-year letterwinner for Lamar (2000-03), helping Lamar win the 2002 Southland Conference Tournament championship in Beaumont and advance to the NCAA Regional at Austin. He helped the Cardinals win the 2003 SLC regular season title and advance to the championship game of the NCAA Regional at Austin. Gray posted a 5-2 record with a 2.69 ERA as a freshman in 2001 and was named SLC freshman of the year and Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. He posted a 6-5 record with a 3.62 ERA in 2002 to earn honorable mention all-SLC honors and was named to the SLC All-Tournament team after pitching a complete-game, three-hit shutout vs. Texas State that sent the Cardinals to the championship game of the SLC Tournament. He closed out his career at Lamar with an 8-6 record and a 3.42 ERA in 2003. While at Lamar, Gray was active in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as president for two years (2001-03). Gray was selected in the 30th round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins. He played for the Twins Rookie League teams in Elizabethtown (Tenn.) and Quad Cities (Iowa). He played for the Fort Meyers Miracles in 2004 and 2005, which is the Twins high Single-A team. A native of Orange, Gray played for the Fargo-Morehead Redhawks of the Northern League in 2006. He posted a 4-1 record with a 3.10 earned run average for the Redhawks last summer. He helped Fargo-Morehead with the Northern League championship and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up the win in the Redhawks' divisional championship game. He is still under contract with Fargo-Morehead. Gray has been very active in community service during his professional career. He has worked with the Boys and Girls Club and gave a fitness seminar at a retirement center in Fargo, N.D. Gray, and his wife Kendra, who graduated from Lamar with a Marketing degree, reside in Port Neches, Texas. |
