EDINBURG - Junior Colt Crawford went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in to lead Lamar University to a 17-9 win at Texas-Pan American in non-conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Edinburg Stadium, completing a three-game sweep for the Cardinals.
Lamar, who swept a three-game series from visiting Jackson State to open the season, improved to 6-0 on the season. UTPA dropped to 2-5. The Cardinals next action will be at the Coca Cola Classic hosted by Rice University at Reckling Park this weekend. Lamar opens the tournament with a 1 p.m. game Friday against Mississippi.
The Cardinals scored four runs in the top of the first inning off UTPA starter Kelly Casares and added two more runs in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. Crawford and C.J. Ebarb had a RBI singles, and Michael Ambort drove in a run with a ground out and Colin DeLome, getting his first start of the season in right field, drove in the other run with a sacrifice fly to right.
Ambort, who scored four runs, started a two-out rally in the third inning with a double to right field. DeLome followed with a double to center field to drive in Ambort. After Ebarb walked, Chase Richards delivered a RBI single to right to drive in DeLome.
UPTA struck for a pair of runs off Lamar starter William Delage in the bottom of the third inning. Louie Alamia singled in Alfred Padron, who reached on a single. Mark Rodriguez singled in Alamia to make the score 6-2.
The Broncs trimmed the lead to 6-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Jacob Jones walked and scored on a double to left field by Gutierrez.
Lamar scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to push the lead to 9-3. Ambort and DeLome walked to lead off the inning, however pinch-hitter Will Henderson hit into a double play. Richards started another two-out rally with a RBI double to right field to drive in Ambort. Matt Lambeth reached on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Richards to score. Crawford closed out the scoring with a RBI single.
The Broncs stormed back with six runs in the home half of the seventh inning to tie the game at 9-9. Aaron Flowers delivered a 2-run to right field. After Jones walked to re-load the bases, Chuckie Platt
was brought on in relief of Scott Meyer
, who replaced Delage with two outs in the sixth inning. Rodriguez coaxed a RBI walk. Gutierrez and Saenz both had RBI singles to chase Platt in favor of Jason Stutes
, who made his collegiate debut. Zach Gordon drove in the final run on a hit by pitch from Stutes.
Lamar quickly struck back with three runs in the eighth inning and capped off the day with five runs in the ninth. Henderson had a RBI single and Murray Gilbertson doubled in a run in the eighth.
Henderson also delivered a RBI single in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Jeremy Gray drove in a pair of runs on a sacrifice fly to right field and Crawford drove in the final run of the game with a single.
Andrew Leal with 2-for-5 with three runs scored. Henderson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Richards went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Stutes (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win, allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Delage pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Meyer allowed five runs on three hits with two walks in one-third of an inning.
Chad Linders (0-2) took the loss in relief for UTPA, allowing two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning pitched. Casares allowed six runs on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings pitched.
Gutierrez led the Broncs offense, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Flowers went 1-for-5 with two RBI and Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
