BEAUMONT - Southern Mississippi rallied for three runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim 5-2 win Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Cardinal Classic at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Lamar had its two-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 9-6 on the season. USM improved to 9-2 on the season. The Cardinals remain at home Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
With the wind howling in at Vincent-Beck Stadium, the game shaped up to be a classic pitcher's duel. Lamar starter Derrick Gordon pitched well, allowing one unearned run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six and two-third innings. USM starter Mike Cashion was just as good, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in seven innings pitched.
The game was scoreless through five innings until the Cardinals broke through with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chase Richards led off the inning with a walk and stole second. Cantu followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Michael Ambort grounded into a double play, but Richards was able to score on the play.
USM struck answered with a run in the top of the seventh and took a 2-1 lead with another run in the eighth. Kevin Coker reached on an error by Gordon with two outs and scored on Jody Blount's double to right center field. Jason Lowery delivered a RBI single to right field in the eighth.
Lamar tied the game with a run home half of the eighth inning. Richards, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, led off the inning with a single and Cantu followed with a double down the right field line. Ambort drove in Richards with a ground out to tie the game.
USM struck for three runs in the top of the 10th inning to take a 5-2 lead. Trey Sutton led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Beau Griffin. Marc Maddox followed with a double to left center to drive in the go-ahead run. Brad Willcutt singled off Chuckie Platt, Lamar's fourth pitcher of the game, to drive in Maddox. The Golden Eagles closed out the scoring on a single to right field by Lowery. An error by Chad Barbre in right allowed Willcutt to score all the way from first base.
Richards singled to lead off the bottom of the 10th for Lamar. Cantu flied out, Ambort struck out and Will Henderson
grounded out to end the game.
