McKinley and Warren shut down UTPA
March 16, 2013
EDINBURG - Lamar pitchers Lance Warren and Jayson McKinley were put into an unexpected position during Saturday's baseball game at Texas-Pan American, but the duo responded in sublime fashion, shutting out the Broncs for a 3-0 victory at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Warren, who learned of his starting role on Friday night, allowed five hits in four innings of work. McKinley was even better, holding the Broncs hitless into the ninth. The freshman gave up just a single over five innings to earn his second win of the season.
Offensively, the Cards did just enough to win, grabbing a lead in the first and adding a pair of runs late to put it out of reach. Brad Picha was the only player in the game to register multiple hits, ending 2-for-4 with a score and a run batted in, and overall, LU out-hit UTPA 7-6.
Lamar scored the opening run in the first. Darian Johnson sent a 3-2 pitch to left for a two-out single. After stealing second to move into scoring position, the senior scored on a Picha single.
Johnson finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
From there on out, it turned into a pitcher's duel before LU tripled its advantage in the eighth. Picha led off with a single and later scored on an error by UTPA pitcher Guadalupe Barrera. Seth Dornak, who was hit by a pitch early in the frame, scored when Garret Autrey grounded into a double play.
With the victory, LU improved to 17-3 on the season and will now look for a fifth consecutive weekend series win on Sunday. Jonathan Dziedzic is slated to make the start for the Cardinals, and first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
