Dziedzic fans eight in shutout of UTPA
March 17, 2013
EDINBURG – Jonathan Dziedzic had yet another outstanding start on the mound Sunday, striking out eight batters to help the Lamar baseball team to a 6-0 victory over Texas-Pan American at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Lamar, which saw its 12-game win streak come to an end on Friday night, improved to 18-3 on the season and picked up a fifth consecutive series victory. UTPA dropped to 4-11.
Dziedzic tossed seven five-hit innings vs. the Broncs and now has 38 strikeouts on the season over just 31.2 frames. He moved to 3-1 as a starter.
Travis Moore picked up the game’s final six outs without giving up a hit.
Offensively, the Cards and Broncs each registered five hits, and Garret Autrey was the only player with multiple, going 2-for-4 with a score.
Lamar once again got off to a strong start, taking advantage of a pair of errors to grab the 1-0 advantage. V.J. Bunner led off the frame by reaching on an error, and later scored on a mistake by UTPA pitcher Matt Daniels.
Much like Saturday, the game turned into a pitching duel, but it all changed in the seventh as the Card offense exploded for five runs. Autrey led off with a single and both Sam Bumpers and Bunner walked to load the bases and chase Daniels from the mound.
Dusten Knight took over for UTPA and promptly walked Jude Vidrine for the first score. An error by UTPA shortstop Riley Goulding brought home another and a wild pitch put the Cards up 4-0. Seth Dornak followed up with two-run single up the middle.
Vidrine finished 0-for-3 with a pair of walks and a score, and Dornak was 1-for-3 with two runs batted in and a walk.
Lamar will return to action later this week with a pair of games vs. future Southland foe Houston Baptist on Tuesday and Wednesday.
