Lambeth's 2-Run Home Run in 11th Inning Lifts Lamar to 6-4 win over UTSA

BEAUMONT - Senior Matt Lambeth hit a game-ending two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the 11th inning to give Lamar University a 6-4 win over Texas-San Antonio Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar, who took two of three in the weekend series, improved to 15-10 overall and 4-2 in SLC play. UTSA dropped to 13-9 overall and 1-2 in SLC play. The Cardinals host long-time rival Louisiana-Lafayette Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Senior Will Henderson, who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a single to center field. Chad Barbre came on to pinch-run for Henderson at first. Noah Tritz replaced Caleb Barton on the mound for the Roadrunners. Lambeth hit the first pitch from Tritz over the left field wall to give Lamar a 6-4 win.

Sophomore Scott Meyer (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Cardinals, allowing no runs on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk in two and one-third innings pitched. Barton (0-2) was the hard-luck loser, allowing one run on six hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in 6 2/3 innings pitched for UTSA.

Sophomore Allen Harrington turned in an outstanding relief performance for the Cardinals. He allowed no runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in 7.0 innings pitched. LU starter Derrick Gordon allowed four runs on six hits with three walks in 1 2/3 innings pitched.

USTA scored four runs in the top of the second inning. James Keithley reached on a one-out bunt single. Zach Etheredge walked and Michael Rockett singled to center field to drive in Keithley with the game's first run.

 

 

Mitch Ponza doubled down the left field line to drive in Etheredge. Marshall Davis followed with a 2-run single to left field to put the Roadrunners up 4-0.

Lamar responded with four runs in the home half of the second inning. Dan Hernandez walked and C.J. Ebarb doubled down the right field line to put both runners in scoring position. Henderson singled to left field to drive in Hernandez.

Lambeth put down a sacrifice bunt to move Ebarb and Henderson into scoring position. Jo Jo Haney, who was 2-for-3, reached on an infield single to drive in Ebarb. Cory Zimmerman drove in Henderson with a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game at 4-4.
