Lamar Drops Heartbreaker as SE Louisiana Scores Three Runs in the Ninth Inning for 4-3 Win

BEAUMONT - Steve Clevenger's 3-run double to right center field in the top of the ninth was the game winner as Southeastern Louisiana defeated Lamar University 4-3 in Southland Conference baseball action Friday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Lamar dropped to 25-13 overall and 9-4 in SLC play. SLU improved to 16-20 overall and 6-7 in SLC play. The Cardinals remained in a tie for second place in the SLC standings with Texas-Arlington, who lost 12-4 at Texas-San Antonio. Northwestern State (12-1) increased its lead to three games with a 12-2 win at Sam Houston State.

The Cardinals and Lions continue the series today at 2 p.m. Junior William Delage, who is 4-2 with a 3.77 earned run average, will start for Lamar. SLU is likely to sent Rodney Story, who is 4-3 with a 4.70 ERA, to the mound.

Entering the top of the ninth inning down 3-1, Trent Hebert started the game-winning rally with an infield single. Jon Greenwich followed with a single up the middle and was lifted for pinch-runner Will Peah. Tony Suarez, trying to sacrifice, reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.

Scott Vander Weg came on in relief of Derrick Gordon, who relieved starter Steve MacFarland in the seventh inning. Vander Weg struck out Gary Duhe and Kyle Ginn. Clevenger hit a 1-1 pitch to the warning track in right center field to clear the bases and give the Lions a 4-3 lead.

SLU starter Bernard Robert (5-3) retired the Cardinals in order in the bottom of the ninth for a complete-game win. He allowed three runs on 10 hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in nine innings pitched.

Trailing 1-0, Lamar finally broke through against SLU starter Robert with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Adrian Cantu reached on an infield single and Jeremy Gray followed with a single to right field. Chase Richards sacrificed both runners into scoring position.

 

 

Pinch-hitter C.J. Ebarb drove in Jo Jo Haney, who was pinch-running for Cantu, with a single to center field to tie the game. Colt Crawford drove in Gray on a fielder's choice to put Lamar up 2-1.

The Cardinals added a run in the eighth inning. Michael Ambort, who was 2-for-4, singled to right field with two outs. Haney singled to center field to put runners on the corners. Gray, who was 3-for-4, drove in Ambort with a RBI single to left field that made the score 3-1.

SLU pushed across the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning. Randy Roth singled to right field and Ryan Spencer, whose at-bat was extended by a drop foul by Murray Gilbertson in right field, singled to right field. Roth was able to advance to third when Gilbertson slipped trying to field Spencer's single. Jason Waguespack drove in Roth with a fielder's choice.

MacFarland, making his third straight start, allowed one unearned run on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks and six innings pitched. Gordon (3-5) allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in two innings pitched.
