Lamar picked third in preseason baseball poll

BEAUMONT - Lamar University, which won the 2010 Southland Conference Tournament to earn a berth in the NCAA's Fort Worth Regional, has been picked to finish third in the 2011 baseball race by the league's head coaches and fourth by its sports information directors. Coach Jim Gilligan's Cardinals, who went 35-26 last season, return all of their infield starters, two starting outfielders and a pair of starting pitchers, received one first-place vote and 96 points in the coaches' poll to trail second-place vote getter Southeastern Louisiana by three points. Two-time defending regular-season champion Texas State topped the poll with nine first-place votes and 113 points. The Cardinals, who scored a four-game sweep in the conference tournament after finishing the regular season in a sixth-place tie, earned 92 points in the SIDs' poll, five fewer than third-place finisher Northwestern State. Texas State was the top point earner with 112, and SLU was second with 103. Coach Ty Harringtpn's Texas State Bobcats return 20 letterwinners, six starters and 12 pitchers, including junior Carson Smith, the Southland's pitcher and newcomer of the year recipient. Texas State went 23-10 in conference play last spring, recording its fourth 20-win season in league action in the past five years. Opening day of the Southland season is Feb. 18 with conference play beginning March 6. The SLC Tournament will be played May 25-28 at Bobcat Baseball Stadium in San Marcos. Coaches' Poll
