FRISCO, Texas - McNeese State outfielder Andy Riche' has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week and Lamar right hander Spencer Cuniff has been named the Southland Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Cuniff earned the victory in Lamar's 5-4 17-inning victory that clinched a sweep of the visiting Maine Black Bears in the first series of the season. The senior from Hamshire, Texas (Hamshire-Fannett), entered the game with the score knotted 4-4 after nine innings. He pitched the final eight innings, allowing five hits (all singles), struck out five without issuing a walk. Opposing batters managed just a .105 average against him.
Riche' helped lead the Cowboys to a three-game sweep of Valparaiso last weekend at Cowboy Diamond. The senior from Sulphur, La. (Sulphur), was 5-for-10 at the plate and drove in seven RBI thanks to his two doubles and two triples. He was 3-for-4 and drove in three runs in the season opener last Friday. He was 1-for-4 with an RBI in the middle game and finished the series 1-for-2 while driving in three more runs. In the three games, Riche' had a .545 on-base percentage and a .900 slugging percentage.
Honorable mention for hitter of the week goes to UTSA second baseman Ryan Hutson, UT Arlington outfielder Michael Choice, Texas State infielder Kyle Livingstone, Southeastern Louisiana outfielder Jeff Harkensee and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi outfielder Jeramie Marek.
Honorable mention for pitcher of the week goes to Texas State right hander Carson Smith, Southeastern Louisiana right hander Josh Janway, Stephen F. Austin right hander Jared West and McNeese State right hander Jonathan Conrad.
