HOUSTON - After posting a 3-0 record in hosting the Lamar Classic over the weekend, Lamar University puts its season-best five-game winning streak on the line Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at the University of Houston at Cougar Field in the Cardinals final tune-up before the start of Southland Conference play.
Senior William Delage was named SLC Pitcher of the Week for the second time in three weeks on Monday. He tossed a complete-game shutout in Lamar's 4-0 blanking of Connecticut on Saturday. He allowed just two hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 9.0 innings pitched. He is now 3-1 on the season with a 3.90 earned run average with 33 strikeouts and 10 walks in 32.1 innings pitched, and is limiting opponents to a .207 batting average.
Lamar is 10-6 on the season after posting wins over Iona College (23-0), Connecticut (4-0) and New Orleans (2-1, 10 in.) over the weekend. The Cardinals posted a 5-4 win over Houston last Tuesday in Beaumont, which was the first meeting between the two teams since the 1998 season.
Houston is 8-8 on the season and lost two of three at No. 8-ranked LSU over the weekend. The Cougars won the first game of the series 5-3, and lost the next two games 0-7 and 3-5.
Freshman left-hander Justin Walker, who is 1-0 with a 3.24 ERA, is expected to make his first collegiate start for the Cardinals. Left-hander Clint Corrigan, who is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA, is expected to start for the Cougars.
Junior Ryan Baker continues to lead the team and the SLC in batting with a .422 average (27/64) with 14 runs scored, four doubles and 14 runs batted in. Senior C.J. Ebarb is hitting .415 (22/53) with 15 runs scored, eight doubles, four home runs and a team-leading 20 RBI.
Junior Erik Kanaby continues to swing a hot bat for the Cards and has raised his average to .346 with 14 runs scored and leads the team with five stolen bases. Senior Will Henderson is hitting .339 with 14 runs scored, six doubles, three home runs and 14 RBI. Sophomore Collin Delome is hitting .323 with a team-high 18 runs scored, four home runs and 14 RBI.
Lamar leads the SLC with a .322 team batting average with 126 runs scored, 183 hits, 35 doubles and 15 home runs. Cardinal hitters have walked 64 times and struck out 98 times. The pitching staff has a 4.21 team ERA with 143 strikeouts and 73 walks in 139.0 innings pitched, and is limiting opponents to a .237 batting average.
Bryan Tully leads UH in batting with a .345 average with 14 runs scored, three doubles, two home runs and nine RBI. Brad Lincoln is hitting .339 with two doubles, three home runs and a team-best 18 RBI. He is also 3-1 with a 2.23 ERA in five starts on the mound.
UH is hitting .267 as a team with 81 runs scored, 146 hits, 27 doubles and nine home runs. Cougar hitters have walked 49 times and struck out 94 times. The pitching staff has a 3.59 team ERA with 134 strikeouts and 62 walks in 138.0 innings pitched, and is limiting opponents to a .236 batting average.
