BEAUMONT – The Lamar baseball team is on a 12-game winning streak, but extending it further will take even more effort as the Cardinals head to UTPA for the season’s first road series.

The Cardinals have played just one road game this season, falling at LSU last month. Following the loss, LU returned to the friendlier confines of Vincent-Beck Stadium for a 13-game home stand that featured 12 victories. Lamar is now off to its best start since 1977 with a 16-2 record.

Pitching has been key over the stretch, and will undoubtedly play a role as the Cards move to the weekend. The team boasts of a 3.00 earned run average, and Friday night’s scheduled starter Eric Harrington has been outstanding, posting a 1.64 mark in the statistic with an unblemished 4-0 record that includes a pair of complete games.

Collin Chapman will get the call on Saturday, and he carries a 3.33 ERA with a 3-0 mark, and Jonathan Dziedzic is set to go on Sunday after an impressive display last week that featured 12 strikeouts in just 7.2 innings pitched. Overall, Dziedzic has struck out 30 hitters over 24.2 frames.

At the plate, Lamar has impressed as well with a .322 average that ranks first in the conference. Darian Johnson has spearheaded the effort with a .453 rate that includes 17 runs batted in and 16 scores. Aaron Olivas has starred as well at .393 with 13 RBI, and Jude Vidrine is hitting .365 with 17 scores. In all, five LU batters are hitting above .350 with each scoring double-digit runs. Five Cards have also knocked in at least 10 scores.

Lamar will be looking to build on its mark of 65-37 all-time vs. the Broncs. The two sides have met regularly over the years, with the Cards taking home a pair of victories in 2011. The last time LU dropped a game came in 2010, and the last series loss was in 1997 in Edinburg.

The Broncs are 3-9 this season after dropping two out of three at Wichita State last weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 7 p.m.
