BEAUMONT – After participating in one of the greatest pitching duels in conference history, Jonathan Dziedzic was honored by the Southland Conference, earning Pitcher of the Week honors along with Sam Houston State’s Cody Dickson.
Dziedzic tossed 10 scoreless innings on Saturday vs. McNeese State, allowing three hits and striking out 12 before stepping off the mound. The Cardinals went on to win 1-0 in 18 innings.
Dickson tossed a one-hit shutout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
A native of Humble, Dziedzic became the first Lamar player to earn SLC weekly honors this season. The junior was drafted by the Boston Red Sox lost year, and he currently sits second all-time in the school’s record books with 262 career strikeouts.
The Cards will close out their six-game home swing with a meeting against Houston at Vincent-Beck Stadium on Tuesday. It will also mark the end of the home-heavy open to the season which has seen Lamar play 22 of its last 26 games in Beaumont. Lamar is 18-4 in those games.
Tuesday’s meeting marks the 75th in the series, and UH leads all-time with a 47-27 record after holding on for a 4-3 victory in Houston last season. Jude Vidrine and V.J. Bunner starred in the meeting last season, combining to go 4-for-8.
Houston is 21-4 this season and will be carrying a 10-game winning streak into Tuesday. However, the 19th-ranked Cougars' last loss came against a Southland school, falling 9-3 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earlier this month.
Tom Elsom is slated to get the start on the mound for the Cards. The junior has made two appearances this season and carries a 3.38 earned run average over 2.2 innings pitched. He last threw against Houston Baptist last week, allowing a sore and striking out two over 1.2 frames.
First pitch at Vincent-Beck Stadium is slated for 6:30 p.m.
