Baseball advances at Southland Tournament

SUGAR LAND – Head coach Jim Gilligan had to go to his bullpen early on Thursday afternoon, and fortunately for the Lamar baseball team, Lance Warren answered the call in impressive fashion, allowing just three hits over 8.2 innings of work to lead the Cardinals to a 10-3 victory over McNeese State, knocking the Cowboys out of the Southland Tournament at Constellation Field.

Quick Hits

  • Lamar retired 13 consecutive batters to close out its game against No. 10 Rice on Wednesday, but it was too late as they fell 3-2 at Reckling Park.
  • Lamar vs. McNeese is the most played series in school history. The Cards have played the Cowboys 188 times, which is 50 more than any other opponent
  • Chase Angelle will be seeking a seventh consecutive quality start on Sunday. He's one of 17 in the country to have one in each start this season.
  • Jude Vidrine has made 120 consecutive starts for LU, the 26th-longest streak in the nation.
  • Kevin Santana entered the week seventh in the nation in doubles with 11.

  • Vidrine entered 12th in the country in walks and first in the Southland with 21.
  • Lamar as a team ranked 22nd in the country in walks with 111 in 25 games.
  • 17 of LU's 33 players are newcomers, and 15 are junior college transfers.
  • 30 Cards hail from the state of Texas, including six from Southeast Texas and one from Beaumont.
  • LU will play 33 games at home this season, including the first 12.
  • 25 of LU's games are scheduled vs. Texas opponents, including a home-and-home series with perennial powerhouse Rice.

LU vs. Rice

  • McNeese State is 14-9 this season with a 4-2 mark in Southland Conference play.
  • This weekend marks the third Southland series of the season for both LU and McNeese. The Cowboys took two out of three from Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches to open conference play, and then grabbed two out of three over Oral Roberts in Lake Charles this past weekend.
  • The Cowboys have also played a pair of non-conference games against conference favorite Sam Houston State, including a 3-1 loss in Huntsville on Wednesday.
  • Last year, McNeese posted a 23-31 record and finished eighth in the Southland with a 10-17 conference mark.
  • This is McNeese's first season under the direction of head coach Justin Hill, who joined the program from Southeastern Louisiana.
  • The Cowboys were tabbed eighth in the Southland preseason coaches poll and 10th in the SID poll.
  • This weekend will mark the 189th, 190th and 191st all-time meetings between McNeese and Lamar. The Cards have played their neighbors to the east 50 more times than any other opponent in history, posting a 114-72-2 overall record.
  • Last season, the Cards dropped two out of three to the Cowboys. The series was highlighted by an outstanding pitching performance in the second game as eventual Kansas City Royals draft pick Jonathan Dziedzic tossed 10 innings and struck out 10. Travis Moore relieved him on the mound and struck out another 10 in eight innings as LU grabbed a 1-0 walk-off victory.
  • The Red and White avenged the regular season series loss later in the year as Lance Warren tossed 8.2 scoreless innings of relief in a Southland Tournament elimination game. The Waco native allowed just three hits after Will Hibbs was pegged for a trio of runs early in the first.
  • McNeese and Lamar first met in the 1954 season, splitting a pair of games over the course of the year, and then due to LU's disbandment of the baseball program, the schools wouldn't meet again until 1967. With the exception of the 1995 campaign, the Cards and Cowboys have squared off every season since 1967.
  • Current LU associate head coach Jim Ricklefsen is a former McNeese player and head coach. He spent three seasons at the helm of the program, guiding the team to a record-setting 41-16 campaign in 1995.
  • McNeese is one of 12 schools that Lamar has played from the Pelican State. The Cards hold an overall 503-422-2 vs. the state.
