After going 7-1 on its recent homestand, the Lamar baseball team travels to Lafayette, La., for a mid-week game at longtime rival Louisiana-Lafayette. First pitch at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field is set for 6:30 p.m.

Lamar is 18-8 and one game ahead of last year's pace after 26 games when it was 17-9.

While Louisiana's starting pitcher was listed as TBA, Lamar will send senior transfer Ryne Nelson to the mound for his second-straight Tuesday appearance. The 6-1 right-hander from Hitchcock, Texas, threw two scoreless innings in last week's 11-1 win over UTPA. He struck out two and walked two as he earned his first victory as a Cardinal.

Louisiana is comng off a 2-1 home series loss to Florida International as Friday's loss snapped a four-game winning streak. The Cajuns have uncharacteristcally struggled at home this season to a 3-7 record. Among the three victories was a 3-1 triumph over Southeastern Louisiana. ULL has also split a pair of road games against SLC teams UTSA (L, 5-2) and Northwestern State (W, 7-6 in 11 inns.).

Louisiana went 45-17 in 2007 and won the Sun Belt Conference with a 23-7 regular-season mark. They were picked to win the league again this year.

Over the course of the season, the Cajuns will play five different Southland schools 11 times. The return game with the Cardinals in Beaumont is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22.
