Kevin Santana, who will make his Lamar debut this spring after a standout sophomore season at Blinn College, is coming into the 2013-14 school year with a bit of momentum on the heels of a strong season with the Woodlands Strykers of the Texas Collegiate League.
Santana, a .332 hitter for Blinn last year, has been the primary power option for the Strykers, knocking out a team-leading seven homers with 24 runs batted in through 33 games. Despite being a late addition to the squad, he earned an All-Star nod, winning the home run derby and reaching base twice in the game.
Pitchers Will Hibbs and Chase Angelle have also found temporary homes in the TCL, with Angelle becoming a necessary arm for the Victoria Generals. The Orange native has made 13 appearances with two starts this year, compiling a 3-2 record with a 3.82 earned run average over 35.1 innings of work.
Both Joe Arechiga and Jayson McKinley have also stayed within the state for the summer, playing for the Red Dogs of the Karl Young League. Arechiga boasts of a .333 average, and McKinley has allowed just one run in five innings of work out of the bullpen.
In the Jayhawk League, J.T. Autrey has also made some noise out of the pen, striking out 12 in just 7.1 innings of work for the El Dorado Broncos, and out on the east coast, Sam Bumpers has collected 11 scores and five RBI with the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plains League.
Other summer leaguers include both Jake Sutton and Lance Warren in the Texas Showcase League and Kyle Tucker in the Stan Musial League.
