Baseball to open fall practice on Sunday

Sept. 12, 2013

BEAUMONT – Head coach Jim Gilligan will begin yet another fall at the helm of the Lamar baseball program on Sunday as the 37th-year skipper will hold its first scrimmage on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Cards return 21 players from a team that posted 39 wins in the spring, the most for a Cardinal team since 2004. Among the returners are All-Southland shortstop Sam Bumpers and Jude Vidrine, who finished the second in the league in runs scored with 53. Bumpers was a .339 hitter and ended the season second in the SLC with 115 total bases.

David Carver and Collin Chapman will look to lead the returners on the mound. Chapman posted a perfect 3-0 record over 27 innings of work last season before going down with a season-ending injury, and Carver filled in, posting a 5-3 mark over 18 appearances and 12 starts. Jayson McKinley and Lance Warren are the top returners when it comes to ERA, allowing 2.39 and 2.76, respectively.

LU will also hold scrimmages on Monday and Tuesday, both at 2 p.m., as the team prepares for a pair of fall games. The Cards are set to trek to Austin on Sept. 28 for a game at Texas before heading over to Rice on Oct. 19. First pitch for both games is set for 1 p.m.
