Jim Gilligan had a smile on his face Sunday afternoon when he was able to roll out the bats and balls for the entire 46-man group that comprises the 2008 Lamar baseball team's fall roster.

It was a week later than originally scheduled - due to Hurricane Ike - but the staff was able to work out the entire team at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

"We had a good four-hour workout with six innings of intrasquad play on Sunday," Gilligan said.

He also mentioned how exciting it was to see the new players work with the older guys. The two groups were not directly paired with one another during the two-hour sessions of small group work that preceeded the full team workouts.

"It's good to see them competing against each other and its always an exciting time of year to see what kids prove they elong at the top of the team," Gilligan added.

We have a long way to go but just like any team in our league we have a long journey ahead of us."
