Oct. 23, 2009
Lamar baseball to hold Fall World Series BEAUMONT - The Lamar University baseball team will conclude its fall workouts with the playing of the Cardinals' annual Fall World Series. Coach Jim Gilligan's 40-man squad will be divided into Red and White teams for the best-of-five series that will begin Thursday with a 3 p.m. game in Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals' eight seniors will serve as captains - four on each team - and they will conduct a player draft early next week to determine the makeups of their teams. Game 2 of this popular fall series will be played Friday, also at 3 p.m. The series will then resume with a 3 p.m. game on Nov. 2. Games 4 and 5, if necessary, will be played Nov. 3 and Nov. 4, also with 3 p.m. starts. After the series, the Cardinals will take a break from organized practices until preseason preparations begin early in January. The Cardinals' 2010 season opener is set for Feb. 19, against Maine in Vincent-Beck Stadium. The Cardinals will meet the Black Bears in a doubleheader the next day before going on the road for the first time to play at perennial national power Rice University on Feb. 24.
