Lamar's Fall World Series opener delayed by inclement weather
BEAUMONT - The opening game of Lamar University's 2009 Fall World Series, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed until Monday by this week's inclement weather along the threat of more over the next couple of days.
The revised schedule for the best-of-five event that annually concludes Lamar's fall baseball workouts has the Red and White teams - selected by a player draft held on Tuesday - meeting in the opening game at 3 p.m. Monday in Vincent-Beck Stadium. Games 2 and 3 will be played Tuesday and Wednesday, also at 3 p.m. in Vincent-Beck.
Game 4, if necessary, will be played Nov. 6, and Game 5, also if necessary, is set for Nov. 9. Both will also be at 3 p.m. and also in Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Junior first baseman/designated hitter Wade Mathis and junior infielder Aaron Buchanan, both of whom have minor injuries, will serve as coaches for the Red Team. White team coaches will be junior catcher Joey Latulippe and junior pitcher Zach Boulanger, also both on the injured list and also both expected to be healthy well before the Cardinals open their 2010 season at home against the University of Maine on Feb. 19.
Senior right-hander Matison Smith, Lamar's most experienced pitcher, was drafted on the Red Team, while sophomore righty Eric Harrigton, who went 8-1 and posted a 3.01 earned run average last season, went to the White Team. Other lettermen pitchers on the Red Team are right-handers Taylor McInnis, Spencer Cuniff, Cory Holley and Blake Ford, while the White's other veteran hurlers are left-hander Brandon Chambers and righties Kory Cleveland and Garrett Steward.
Senior outfielder Quentin Luquette, the Cardinals' leading returning hitter with a .316 batting average, was selected to the White Team, while senior outfielder Anthony Moore (.279 average) is the Red Team's top returning hitter.
