BEAUMONT - Senior Matthew Barrow scored 16 points to lead Lamar University to an 89-76 win over Central Oklahoma Saturday night in exhibition men's basketball action at the Montagne Center.
Lamar, who went 2-0 in exhibition games including a 92-75 win over Incarnate Word on Nov. 3, opens the regular season Tuesday when LeTourneau University visits the Montagne Center for a 7 p.m. game. The Cardinals will be opening their 57th season as a four-year institution.
With the game tied at 49-49, Kenny Dawkins hit a pair of free throws to give the Cardinals the lead for good at 51-49 with 13:53 remaining in the game. That ignited a 14-4 run that was capped by a pair of free throws by Currye Todd at 11:47.
After the Bronchos trimmed the lead to nine, 69-60, the Cardinals went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 16 points, 76-60. Todd capped the run with a three-pointer at 7:54. Lamar led by as much as 19 points, 83-64, when Barrow made 3 of 4 free throws at 4:59 following a technical foul on UCO's Brian Walker.
The Cardinals scored the game's first four points on consecutive baskets by Dawkins and sprinted out to a 17-5 lead to open the game. A Darren Hopkins layup at 8:48 gave Lamar an 11-point lead at 27-16.
UCO started to chip away and closed to within four, 31-17, on a free throw by Michael Sosanya at 4:25 that capped an 11-4 run. Layups by Keith Marks and John Neal closed the gap to one, 36-35, at 1:27. Neal made 1 of 2 free throws with 27 seconds left in the half to make the score 39-38, which is how the score remained at intermission.
Barrow was 5 of 10 from the field and 5 of 6 at the free throw line in scoring his team-high 16 points. Hopkins added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Dawkins chipped in 14 points, four rebounds and three assists. Lamar Sanders grabbed 11 rebounds to go along with nine points and four assists.
Lamar shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point range and 68.4 percent (26-of-38) from the free throw line. The Cardinals outrebounded the Bronchos 47 to 33. Lamar forced 21 turnovers, but committed 25.
Sam Belt led UCO with 18 points on 6 of 19 shooting from the field, including 4 of 12 from 3-point range. Sosanya recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
UCO shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field, 27.6 percent (8-of-29) from 3-point range and 60 percent (18-of-30) from the free throw line. The Bronchos out scored Lamar 22 to 16 in points off turnovers.
