Cardinals Swoop Past BYU In OT, 86-77

BEAUMONT - Junior James Davis recorded his second straight double-double, and third of the season, with a game-high 20 points and a season-high 16 rebounds to lead Lamar University past Brigham Young 86-77 in overtime Wednesday night in non-conference men's basketball action at the Montagne Center.

Lamar snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 4-6 overall. BYU dropped its second straight road game and dropped to 5-4 on the season. The Cardinals hit the road for a 2 p.m. (CT) game Saturday at Wyoming. Lamar returns home next Wednesday to host Northern Illinois in its final game before the Christmas holiday.

With the game tied at 76-76 in overtime, Matthew Barrow nailed a three-pointer from the right wing that gave Lamar the lead for good at 79-76 with 2:09 remaining in the game. After BYU's Lee Cummard made 1 of 2 free throws, Darren Hopkins hit a 3-pointer from deep in the right corner that put the Cardinals up five, 82-77, at 1:44.

Brandon Chappell and Barrow both made a pair of free throws in the final 16 seconds to seal the win for Lamar. The Cardinals outscored BYU 14-5 in overtime.

The Cardinals sprinted out to a 14-point halftime lead on the strength of 51.5 percent shooting from the field, including making 6 of 14 from three-point range. However, BYU opened the second half with a 10-1 run to cut Lamar's lead to five, 45-40, on a layup by Trent Plaisted at 16:27.

The Cougars used another 8-0 run to trim the Cardinals' lead to one, 53-52, which was capped by a pair three-pointers by Mike Rose. A Plaisted dunk and ensuing free throw to complete the conventional three point play tied the game at 57-57 with 9:24 remaining in regulation.
 

 

A jumper by Rose gave BYU a 70-69 lead with 2:43 left. Davis hit a pair of free throws at 1:50 that gave the Cardinals a brief 71-70 lead. Keena Young, who prepped at Beaumont Ozen HS, made a layup put BYU up 72-71 at 1:30. Lamar Sanders made 1 of 2 free throws at 1:04 to tie the game at 72-72. Both teams missed three-pointers inside the final 10 seconds to send the game into overtime.

Davis was 8 of 17 from the field and 4 of 6 from the free throw line in scoring his 20 points. Sanders added 19 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Currye Todd chipped in 12 points, Hopkins had 11 and Barrow had 10. Lawrence Nwevo came off the bench to grab a career-best eight rebounds.

Lamar shot 47.6 percent (30-of-63) from the field, 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from 3-point range and 54.8 percent (17-of-31) from the free throw line. The Cardinals outrebounded BYU 46 to 43, which led to a 14 to seven advantage in second chance points.

Young led BYU with 19 points and grabbed five rebounds. Jimmy Balderson scored 15 points off the bench and Rose added 14 points off the bench on 4 of 7 shooting from 3-point range. Fernando Malaman grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.

BYU shot 40 percent (28-of-70) from the field, 28 percent (7-of-25) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the free throw line.
