Lamar's Dawkins and Brown Named NABC All-District

March 6, 2009

Lamar seniors Kenny Dawkins and Jay Brown were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 23 Team on Thursday.

Dawkins has averaged 15.8 points, 4.3 assists and made 45 3-pointers in leading Lamar to a 15-14 record this season. He has missed the last five games due to a groin injury. He also has shot 41 percent from the floor, 32 percent from outside and ranks eighth in the nation in free throw percentage at 88.7 percent. Dawkins has reached double figures in scoring 21 times and posted six 20-plus point performances.

Brown has been the Cardinals' most productive big man this season, collecting nine double-doubles while averaging 12.8 points and 8.9 rebounds over 28 games. He ranks second on the team in field goal shooting at 49 percent and has 61 blocks which places him fourth on the LU single-season chart.

Both players were named to the second team and joined by Ashton Mitchell and Corey Allmond of Sam Houston State, along with Troy Jackson of Alcorn State.

This marks the first time Lamar has had an All-District selection since Landon Rowe was a second-team pick in 2000. A total of nine Lamar players have landed on the All-District squads 11 times since 1971.

The NABC announced its Division I All-District teams, recognizing the nation's best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes. Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, these student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across America.

The 240 student-athletes, from 24 districts which were realigned this season, are now eligible for the State Farm Coaches' Division I All-America teams to be announced on Saturday, April 4, at Hoop City in the COBO Center at 10 a.m. as part of the 2009 NABC Convention in Detroit.

Brown and Dawkins will be joined by classmates Brandon McThay and Tristan Worrell in a pregame ceremony prior to Saturday's regular-season finale against Nicholls State. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m. and tickets can be purchased for $4.
