PLANO - Lamar University senior Jason Grant was named to the 2006 Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference All-Academic Team, announced the league office on Friday.

Grant, a four-year letterman from Toronto, Canada, earned second-team all-academic honors. He finished his career as the school's all-time blocked shots leader with 196. He averaged 3.9 points and 2.8 rebounds as a senior. Grant earned SLC all-academic honors in 2004 and 2005, and was named student-athlete of the year in 2004.

Kurt Attaway of Texas-San Antonio was named Student-Athlete of the Year. The honor is the second in as many years for Attaway, a Flower Mound, Texas, product who has a perfect 4.0 grade point average in psychology.

Joining Attaway on the all-academic first-team was Cyril Djoukeng of Nicholls State, Ryan Bright and Aaron Wade of Sam Houston State, Marcus Clark of Stephen F. Austin and Brady Dawkins of Texas-Arlington. Ryan Griffin, Shamir McDaniel and Jeremy Thomas of Sam Houston joined Grant on the SLC all-academic second team.

The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were selected all-conference and/or named as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.0 GPA. Remaining spots on the all-academic teams are then voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition.

The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics and athletics. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA to go along with superior athletics achievement.
