BEAUMONT - Head coach Pat Knight has added much needed size to the Lamar University frontcourt with the signing of power forward Stephen Coles to a national letter of intent Thursday.
The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Coles joins Lamar after spending his sophomore season at Indian Hills Community College, where he helped the Warriors fashion a 22-10 record. Coles earned second-team All-Region 11 honors after averaging 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor.
"Stephen can score both inside and out and is the type of player that we're trying to get here," said Knight. "He is a threat on the block and has good range, and I think he can help us out right away."
Coles spent his freshman season playing at NCAA Division II Catawba College where he was named to the 2010 All-South Atlantic Conference Freshman Team after posting 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. He played in 31 games for the Indians, starting 24.
A native of Danville, Va., Coles prepped at George Washington High School, where he helped the Eagles finish 76-10 during his three varsity seasons. Coles was named first-team All-Western Valley District, All-Northwest Region and honorable mention all-state after averaging 14 points and 12 rebounds during his senior campaign.
Coles helped GWHS to a state runner-up finish as a sophomore, and earned all-metro accolades after averaging 8.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game as a junior.
Coles joins the 6-foot-8, 225-pound Nikko Acosta as signees during Knight's first summer at Lamar. Acosta is also a junior college transfer, spending the 2010-11 season at Gulf Coast Community College.
