BEAUMONT - Brandon McThay of Fork Union (Va.) Military Prep has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue his education and play basketball at Lamar University, announced Head Coach Billy Tubbs.

McThay, a 5-11, 175-pound true point guard, averaged 10 points and nine assists per game last season at Fork Union and was ranked as the 86th best prep school player in the country. He helped Fork Union post a 33-2 record.

As a senior at American Heritage (Fla.) HS, McThay averaged 25 points, eight assists, four rebounds and two steals per game. He was named first-team all-state and was the Sun Sentinel Player of the Year. He helped American Heritage post a 25-7 record and advance to the Florida state championship game, where he earned all-tournament honors.

A native of Deer Field Beach, Fla., McThay averaged 17 points, nine assists and three rebounds per game. He earned second-team all-state honors and was named Sun Sentinel, Palm Beach Post and Boca News Player of the Year. He helped the team post a 25-5 record and advance to the Florida state championship semifinals.

For his high school career, McThay shot 50 percent from three-point range and 90 percent from the free throw line. He joins Lawrence Nwevo of Townsend Catholic HS, who signed with Lamar earlier this week, and Dee Burchett of Southwestern Tennessee CC, who inked with the Cardinals last fall. Matthew Barrow of Southern Lab (La.) HS, who sat out last season to concentrate on academics, will also be able to play for the Cardinals this season.
