BEAUMONT - Lamar men's basketball assistant coach Kenyon Spears has resigned from the Cardinals' staff due to medical reasons, announced Friday by head coach Billy Tubbs.

Spears spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with LU, serving one season under former coach Mike Deane and this past season under Tubbs. Spears cited medical reasons as the decisive factor in his decision.

"We wish for a speedy recovery for Kenyon," Tubbs said of his former assistant. "He did a great job for us and we wish him the best in the future."

A native of Nome and a graduate of Hardin-Jefferson High, Spears was a standout guard for the Cardinals from 1997-01. He was a junior on the Cardinals' 2000 Southland Conference Tournament championship team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Spears finished his career ranked seventh on the school's all-time record list for three-pointers made (121) and 11th in assists (268).
