BEAUMONT - If Wednesday's preseason coaches' poll is any indication, the Southland Conference East Division will be a wide-open race as five of the six schools received at least one first place vote.

Lamar, which is coming off a 14-18 overall record and a 5-11 SLC mark, was picked to finish fourth in the East Division (44 points) despite receiving two first place votes. Northwestern State (45), which got only one first place vote, edged the Cardinals for third in the voting.

LU will open the regular season next Friday night at 7:05 when Lyon College visits the Montagne Center. The Cardinals will play an intrasquad scrimmage on Thursday night (Nov. 4) at 7:30 which is open to the public.

The Cardinals return four starters off of last year's team and six letterwinners overall. Fifth-year head coach Steve Roccaforte will add the nation's ninth-best recruiting class according to as Lamar makes a run at the SLC Tournament.

"I think this conference over the last five is very, very competitive," said Roccaforte. "There are a lot of good coaches and a lot of good players and the league has picked up wins over several bigger conference teams. I think it's going to be a dogfight in the Southland Conference this year."

Nicholls received five first place votes in the coaches' poll and was picked first in the East Division with 53 points. Southeastern Louisiana was just behind in the voting after garnering three first place votes and 52 points. McNeese State, which had the other first place vote, was selected fifth (36) with Central Arkansas chosen sixth (16).

The sports information directors' poll was nearly the same with Nicholls and SLU swapping places for first and second. The next four spots were chosen in the same order as the coaches' poll.

Stephen F. Austin, winner of two of the last three SLC regular season titles, was chosen first in the West Division with eight first place votes and 62 points. Sam Houston State (51) earned two first place votes, while Texas State (46) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (35) were each picked first one time. UTSA (28) and UT Arlington (24) rounded out the West Division.
