BEAUMONT - Former Lancaster High School star Mike Kyser has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at Lamar University beginning in the 2011-12 season, announced LU head coach Steve Roccaforte on Wednesday.

Kyser, a 6-foot-9 forward, completed his high school career this past season and is currently enrolled at Christian Life Center Academy in Humble. A former high school teammate of current Lamar freshman Tre Lynch, Kyser signed with the Cardinals a year ago before enrolling in prep school this fall.

"Playing 35 to 40 games at that level and then still coming in as a true freshman will be a terrific benefit for him and for us," said Roccaforte. "He is another multipurpose player that can knock down face up shots and block shots. Michale is long and athletic and will be a great fit in our press and run style."

Kyser helped lead Lancaster to the Texas Class 4A state championship game as a senior, scoring 15 points and grabbing six rebounds in the loss to Houston Yates. The Tigers finished his senior season with a perfect 9-0 record in winning District 15-4A and went 36-3 on the year.

Kyser averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks per game as a senior on his way to being named First-Team All-District 15-4A. Lancaster went 29-0 in district during Kyser's last three seasons of high school.

"Michale and his team had a great senior season and I like to bring in kids who come from winning programs."
