BEAUMONT, Texas -
The Lamar men's basketball team spent Saturday afternoon at Ford Arena, but it wasn't in preparation for an upcoming opponent. The Cardinals spent the day celebrating the Christmas season with less fortunate children in the southeast Texas area.
"Throughout this program's history, Beaumont and the all of southeast Texas has supported Lamar," said head coach Pat Knight. "This is just one small way that we as a team can say thanks for all the community has done for us. Our guys enjoy getting out in the community. It is hard to tell who has more fun our team or the kids."
It would be easy for student-athletes to get distracted in the month of December, especially in the sport of basketball. Teams are beginning to wrap up their non-conference schedules with conference play less than a month away, and that doesn't begin to include the stress involved with the onset of finals. Despite all of that, head coach Pat Knight, and the Lamar Cardinal basketball team went to Ford Arena Saturday just to hang out with the kids.
The Cardinals met with children, signed autographs, sang Christmas carols, and even met Santa Claus. After gifts were handed out to the kids, a brief message was delivered by a local pastor.
