Wide Receivers

Experience:
Third Season

Recruiting Areas:
Southeast Texas, East Houston, Dallas Metroplex

Southeast Texas native, Kevin Barbay, enters his third season on the Lamar sidelines and is coming off one of the most impressive seasons by a group of receivers in program history.

Led by second-team All-Southland Conference selection, Reggie Begelton, Lamar had numerous receivers finish among the league leaders in every receiving category in 2013. Despite his sophomore status, Begelton led the Southland with 82 receptions, and finished third in the league with 858 receiving yards. He also ended the season tied for fourth in the league in touchdown receptions.

A primary weapon for Lamar's offense, the Cardinals' receivers averaged nearly 300 yards per game last season, with nine different receivers hauling in a TD pass. The LU stable of receivers was so talented it could afford moving former SLC Newcomer of the Year Kevin Johnson to the defensive side of the ball and remain arguably the best group of receivers in the league.

Barbay came to Lamar after spending two years as the athletics director and head coach at Warren (Texas) High School.

Following his high school career, Barbay went to Grambling State to play for former Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams. Barbay then returned to Lamar to finish his education and was introduced to coaching early as he was able to serve as wide receivers coach at Monsignor Kelly High School from 2003-05 while still a student at Lamar.

After earning his bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and Fitness Management from Lamar in 2005, Barbay worked as a graduate assistant coach at Baylor University from 2005-07.

Barbay's first full-time coaching job came at Texas A&M-Commerce. After finishing his master's degree from Baylor in 2007, Barbay spent two seasons as the quarterbacks/wide receivers coach with the Lions before moving on to North Texas as the tight ends coach for a season (2009).

Barbay comes from an impressive coaching pedigree. His late uncle Curtis Barbay was a highly successful coach at Newton High School, while his cousin Bryan is the head coach at Coldsprings High School and his cousin Darrell is the head coach at Jasper High School.

Barbay and his wife Kaci have two children, daughter Kynslie and son Karson.
