Complete 2012 Southland Conference All-Academic Football Team
BEAUMONT - Lamar University punter Kollin Kahler and defensive lineman Logan Moss were both named to the Southland Conference All-Academic Football Team, the league office announced Tuesday.
Kahler is a junior from Waco who is currently carrying a 3.90 grade point average in exercise science. Kahler has already been named to the 2012 Academic All-District 7 First-Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America and to the 15th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star team.
An honorable mention all-conference performer in 2011, Kahler has the best career punting average in school history at 40.8 yards per punt. Kahler averaged 41.5 yards per punt in 2012 and led the Southland Conference with 18 punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
A former standout at Orangefield High School, Moss has a 3.71 grade point average in nursing. Moss played in all 12 games for the Cardinals as a redshirt freshman in 2012, registering 13 tackles with nine solo stops.
Northwestern State kicker John Shaughnessy was named the Southland Conference Football Student-Athlete of the Year and is a three-time all-academic selection. Shaughnessy was also the only other Southland played to earn academic all-district honors.
Every Southland school was represented on the all-academic team with Northwestern State and Nicholls recording a conference-best five members. Central Arkansas, McNeese State and Sam Houston State each had three selections, while Lamar and Stephen F. Austin had two members each.
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 10 member universities, voted for the student-athlete of the year. The Southland student-athlete of the year award is presented to the one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
The All-Academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
