Lamar Football Hits the Field on Tuesday
March 13, 2013
BEAUMONT - Lamar University will begin its fourth spring football season Tuesday when the Cardinals take the field for a 7 p.m. practice at Provost Umphrey Stadium.
The Cardinals, who finished 4-8 overall last year and 1-6 in Southland Conference play, will work out in shorts and helmets for the first two practices. In addition to Tuesday's workout, Lamar will practice Thursday and Friday at 4 p.m. before holding a controlled scrimmage Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
Fourth-year head coach Ray Woodard and his staff will emphasize fundamentals in the early going to make sure the team is on the same page. The Cardinals return over 50 letterwinners from last year's squad, including several key skill position players.
"This has to be a productive spring," said Woodard prior to the first practice. "With all the players we have returning, we need to come out of the spring further along than we have in the past. We need to have our team in place to be ready to compete in the fall."
Defensively, the Cardinals top four tacklers are back led by senior linebacker Jermaine Longino who finished with 107 stops in 2012. Defensive lineman Jesse Dickson also returns for his final season after registering a team-best four sacks a year ago.
The Cardinals will hold 15 practices culminating in the annual Crawfish Bowl on Apr. 16 at 7 p.m. All practices and scrimmages are open to the public.
Lamar's 12-game season begins on Aug. 31 when Oklahoma Panhandle State pays a visit to Provost Umphrey Stadium. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715 or visit www.LamarCardinals.com.
