CHARLESTON, S.C. -
Sophomore running back Kade Harrington has been named to the 2014 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Watch List for running backs announced CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith Monday afternoon. Harrington is one of 38 FCS running backs named to the watch list.
"We would like to congratulate Kade on earning a spot on this year's watch list," said Smith. "Harrington had a tremendous freshman season for Lamar in 2013."
Expected to redshirt prior to the start of the 2013 season, Harrington came in and immediately impressed LU head coach Ray Woodward, and the Cardinals coaching staff. He was so impressive that he earned a spot on the depth chart heading into the season opener. He quickly turned his playing time into a starting role as he set a school single-season record for rushing yards by a freshman. Harrington finished the year with 180 carries for 880 yards and eight scores. He ended the year ranked sixth in the league in rushing, the best mark by any freshman in the Southland.
"We originally wanted to redshirt Kade - that was the plan," said Woodard. "But he was so impressive during preseason drills that we couldn't afford to. He just continues to try and out work everyone."
Harrington's success on the field didn't just come from running the football. He also set an LU freshman record for receptions. Finishing the season ranked among the league's top 10 in receptions, Harrington hauled in 48 passes for 376 yards and four touchdowns.
Following the season Harrington was named the Southland's Freshman of the Year by the league head coaches and sports information directors.
